Fragrance has traditionally been described through gender. Florals, sweetness and powdery notes are often associated with femininity, while woods, leather, tobacco and spices are more readily described as masculine. Yet scent itself has no gender. These associations are largely a matter of convention, and they can become particularly limiting when choosing fragrance for the home.
A unisex fragrance offers a different way of thinking about scent. It does not mean neutral, subtle or designed to please everyone. A unisex composition can be dark, floral, smoky, fresh, woody or intensely aromatic. What changes is not its character, but the idea that this character needs to belong specifically to a man or a woman.
In home fragrance, this feels especially natural. A room does not need a masculine or feminine scent. We can choose according to atmosphere, personality and preference instead: something warm and enveloping, dry and woody, green and fresh, or deeper and more unconventional. The fragrance becomes a reflection of the person and the space rather than a gender category.
The same approach can make choosing fragrance as a gift more personal. Instead of starting with for him or for her, we can think about the person themselves: the interiors they create, the materials they like, the perfumes they wear, the places they enjoy or simply the kind of atmosphere that feels like them.
Perhaps choosing beyond gender simply changes the question. Instead of Would they like this?, we can ask Does this feel like them?
